  8. Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that early man appeared in the Red
  9. River Delta during the Paleolithic period, 300,000-500,000 years ago.
  10. Excavations and investigations into the past has revealed a series of
  11. archaeological, historical and ethnological milestones:

  13. 20000 BC - Paleolithic culture of So7n Vi developed into the Mesolithic
  14. culture of Ho2a Bi2nh: short axe, nomadic hunters, and food gatherers who
  15. sought shelter in caves and had knowledge of fire.

  17. 5000 BC - Neolithic culture of Ba81c So7n: polished stone tools and other
  18. remains suggest a move from strict gathering to agriculture and fishing.

  20. 2000 BC - Early Bronze Age culture of Phu2ng Nguye6n: rice cultivation,
  21. animal rearing, and weaving.  A single Phu2ng Nguye6n site at Vi4nh Phu1
  22. province covered a large area and accommodated thousands of inhabitants.
  23. This primitive communalism of tribes developed into a more hierarchical
  24. society, characterized by smaller habitation sites and the large graves of
  25. ruling class people.

  27. 1400 BC - Middle Bronze Age culture of D9o62ng D9a65u: Remains of chickens
  28. and pigs and the presence of a large cemetery do suggest agriculture to
  29. support a large and technically advanced population.

  31. 1100 BC - Climax of the Bronze Age culture of Go2 Mun: With irrigation, flood
  32. control, and the rise of rice as the dominant crop, the Vietnamese began to
  33. concentrate in the Red River Delta.

  35. 800-300 BC - Late Bronze Age to early Iron Age culture of D9o6ng So7n: slash
  36. and burn cultivation, bronze swing ploughs and stone hoes.  Totemism,
  37. tattooing, the use of betel nut, lacquering of teeth and the crossbow.

  39. 2879-258 BC-  Ho62ng Ba2ng Dynasty at Vi4nh Phu1, ruled by 18 consecutive
  40. Hu2ng Vu7o7ng Kings.  This era is associated with the following periods:
