Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that early man appeared in the Red
River Delta during the Paleolithic period, 300,000-500,000 years ago.
Excavations and investigations into the past has revealed a series of
archaeological, historical and ethnological milestones:
20000 BC - Paleolithic culture of So7n Vi developed into the Mesolithic
culture of Ho2a Bi2nh: short axe, nomadic hunters, and food gatherers who
sought shelter in caves and had knowledge of fire.
5000 BC - Neolithic culture of Ba81c So7n: polished stone tools and other
remains suggest a move from strict gathering to agriculture and fishing.
2000 BC - Early Bronze Age culture of Phu2ng Nguye6n: rice cultivation,
animal rearing, and weaving. A single Phu2ng Nguye6n site at Vi4nh Phu1
province covered a large area and accommodated thousands of inhabitants.
This primitive communalism of tribes developed into a more hierarchical
society, characterized by smaller habitation sites and the large graves of
ruling class people.
1400 BC - Middle Bronze Age culture of D9o62ng D9a65u: Remains of chickens
and pigs and the presence of a large cemetery do suggest agriculture to
support a large and technically advanced population.
1100 BC - Climax of the Bronze Age culture of Go2 Mun: With irrigation, flood
control, and the rise of rice as the dominant crop, the Vietnamese began to
concentrate in the Red River Delta.
800-300 BC - Late Bronze Age to early Iron Age culture of D9o6ng So7n: slash
and burn cultivation, bronze swing ploughs and stone hoes. Totemism,
tattooing, the use of betel nut, lacquering of teeth and the crossbow.
2879-258 BC- Ho62ng Ba2ng Dynasty at Vi4nh Phu1, ruled by 18 consecutive
Hu2ng Vu7o7ng Kings. This era is associated with the following periods:
Phu2ng Nguye6n, D9o62ng D9a65u, Go2 Mun and D9o6ng So7n.
257-208 BC - An Du7o7ng Vu7o7ng founds and reigns over the Kingdom of A6u La5c.
208 BC - Trie65u D9a2 conquers A6u La5c and founds Nam Vie65t.
111 BC - Ha1n Wu Di conquers Nam Vie65t.
40-43 AD - Uprising led by the two Tru7ng sisters.
284 AD - Uprising led by Lady Trie65u.
